Six Hours Open-heart Operation for Cyanotic baby


Two minutes after birth, Isabella with oxygen supplement and infusion of drug was transported to the ICU of Grantham Hospital. At the same night, doctors from Grantham Hospital performed a minor procedure (balloon and atrioseptostomy), which was to create a hole between the two upper chambers to improve oxygen level in the blood. After ten days, Isabella must undergo corrective operation, which took six hours.

A Small Matter Of Life Or Death

There is a problem," said the doctor. These four simple words ambushed us like muggers in the dark. Our daughter Isabelle was just a few minutes old and the euphoria of the delivery room was already stone dead. In its place, in that private room at Baptist Hospital on a Sunday afternoon in February, there was fear. Fear as we waited for the specialist. Fear as we imagined the unimaginable. "What's wrong with Isabelle," whispered Annie, still groggy from the Caesarian. I didn't know what to say. I held her hand and we waited.

Matters of the Heart

It is surely a parent's worst nightmare: a seemingly healthy newborn suddenly turns blue and is whisked away to intensive care. His tiny heart fails to pump properly and his body is deprived of a vital supply of oxygenated blood. Death will be imminent unless immediate surgery can be performed.
