Medical Exchange Programme

2008

The CHF sponsored visits by two leading pediatric cardiac surgeons (one from from the UK in December 2007 and the other from the US in April 2008). Both performed surgery on children with complex congenital heart diseases and shared the latest surgical techniques and experience with their local counterparts.

2007

The Medical treatment for young adult with congenital heart disease

The medical and technological advancements of the last decade have greatly increased the chances of survival for children with complex cardiac anomalies; as many as 90% of these children live to adulthood. As they grow up, providing medical services to these patients poses some new challenges - should they continue to receive medical care from the pediatric cardiac ward or from the adult cardiac unit?

In response to this issue, the CHF would like to develop an Adult Congenital Heart Centre in Hong Kong. From October to November 2007, CHF sponsored a local medical expert to visit and learn from the Philadelphia Adult Congenital Heart Center in the United States. This visit laid the foundations for developing Hong Kong's own congenital heart medical care centre for adults.

2006

In 2006, the CHF sponsored a visit to Hong Kong by Dr. Victor Tsang, one of the UK's leading paediatric cardiac surgeons. From June 26-30 June he operated on several young children with life-threatening heart conditions and shared his vast experience with local paediatric cardiac surgeons at the Grantham Hospital.

At the welcome dinner for Dr. Tsang on 27 June, the CHF presented Grantham Hospital with a cheque for $750,000 to buy specialist medical equipment.
